Week 2 Recap

Now we won’t say that we nailed our week 2 prediction, but we definitely nailed our week 2 prediction. We had 2 of the 3 movements that came out! We took care of our repeat workout this year, by redoing 16.2— Heavy cleans were on deck, but you had to make your way through toes to bar and double-unders to get there. We didn’t hear anything from the little people this week!

We had some surprises and some AWESOME performances this week, with some notable ones listed below:

fnl5.jpg
  • Becky Blackwood (aka Dr.BBMonkey) continues to make her presence known in the scaled division, as she notches a 2nd straight week on the leaderboard. And in classic Becky fashion, she asked “I pay monthly for this sh!t and all I get is my name on a board?!”

  • With her unbreakable strategy and immeasurable experience, the wily veteran retiree makes her showing on the Women’s RX board , lil Lauren Randle notches a solid 3rd place behind our top 2 mainstays.

  • This week’s Gritty Performance is presented by the Girl Scouts of America**— thanks girls for breaking New Year’s resolutions all over the country…. The Gritty Performance of the Week goes to Nidia Selwyn, who PR’d the shit out of her clean, even after contemplating life and her choice to pay for an Unlimited Membership while stuck at the bottom of 115#, which she eventually stood up, inspired and energized by the flexing of Cooley’s bicep.

  • We cant’ say enough about our scaled men, with TWO athletes finishing (Julio Rodriguez, Matthew O’Neil) and another getting capped in his last round (Amar Gujral). Is this a product of supreme fitness/sandbagging, or strategic placement by their respective team captains? We might never know, but what we do know is that we won’t be letting these guys squeak by in class anymore 👀.

  • Let’s not forget our scaled women as well, as we had a 3 way tie for 2nd (Becky, Nidia, Kate Beamer) and a clear leader in first (Sarabeth Westwood). Its clear that these women did not come to play, but it isn’t clear if this was done with strategic purpose as THREE of the FOUR women are from Team JOE… though that may be giving Joe way too much credit.

  • Team JOE took a their team spirit to heart this week after getting demolished last week, unleashing a mess of balloons, pictures, and outfits throughout the gym. They went so far that some balloons may or may not have sabotaged a teammate after a balloon got stuck in/on/around a toilet. And while Team JOE was definitely missing some athletes doing the workout this week, I did hear him say “w e l l, y a k n o w, i t s a b o u t q u a l i t y n o t q u a n t i t y.” (this is meant to display a cajun drawl), since even though only 13/16 of his athletes attempted the workout, FIVE made it onto the leaderboard, which tied with the most this week, and his scaled women almost swept the whole darn thing. However, if Team JOE wants to make a comeback, he’ll need all hands on deck, given the strong showings from the other teams…

  • Team JOEL took a commanding lead this week, with all but 2 of his athletes attending FNL and all but 1 completing the workout! In addition to those bonus points accrued through just participation, these guys didn’t just come to participate— they also placed FIVE athletes on our top leaderboards scattered among almost all divisions! Now the question that is presented: can Team Joel keep this up? Are they going to rest on their laurels and depend on participation & performances with sub-par team spirit? We aren’t sure how long props and costumes are gonna cut it…

  • Team NIVI still brought the house with decorations and team spirit this week, but suffered without the guidance of their leader. As we all know, a cardboard cutout Nivi simply isn’t as screechy as real Nivi. With the other two teams taking top performances on the leaderboard, it was a tough week for this team to take the Team Spirit loss, as the award would have created more separation between them and Team JOE. Can Nivi lead her team back this week? How much more can she pull out of her bag? How long until she uses her Girl Scout Cookies for evil?…

As with every open, to guess what’s coming next is like trying to predict Houston precipitation patterns. However, we can guarantee that the carnage will continue, and the skills will become more advanced, and the scaled division will be absolutely CUT THROAT. Be sure to tune into games.crossfit.com at 7PM or to @crossfitderive on Instagram at 8PM to see what’s in store for this upcoming Friday. Just like every weatherman/woman in Houston, we will make a predication: Ring Muscle-ups, Dumbbell lunges, and Dumbbell snatches. And just like every weatherman/woman in Houston, we will be wrong.

See you guys on Friday!
